Urban Decay Primer Potion Review

Urban Decay Primer Potion £15

Last year I reviewed the MUA Eye Primer (post) and this was my first eye primer so I was really impressed and when I ran out I decided to try the urban decay version.

Since I already reviewed the MUA version and it is significantly cheaper I thought it would be best to compare these side by side to see how they compare to each other.

Applicator

MUA – A wand with a foam applicator, more control over the product.
UD – A squeeze tube with a nozzle, I prefer the MUA wand as with the UD I need to squeeze onto my finger and then wipe over my eyes.  The mini version that comes with the naked palette has a wand so I now use this more.

Formula

MUA – A yellow based formula that goes on the eye clear, so this colour doesn't show up at all on the eyes.
UD – This is also yellow/nude based but this does transfer to the eye which is great to cover any dark pigmentation, veins, discoloration.  I prefer this coverage as it creates a blank canvas for the eye makeup.

Staying Power

MUA – As mentioned in the review on this I once slept in my eye makeup and when I woke up I couldn't believe that my full smokey eye was still almost perfectly intact! I have really oily eyelids and without a primer only get about 2 hours of eye shadow but for this to give me 12 hours wear is amazing! Obviously I never normally need that amount of coverage over 12 hours but was a good test to show that it does last
UD – As a comparison I did the same test and it didn't provide me with the same results.  Most of the eye makeup had been removed but as I said above I never need 12 hours in eye makeup.  For the day hours when I do wear this sometimes after around 5 hours I can see the eye shadow slowly slipping of my lids but usually depends on what type of shadow I am using so as long as I apply everything correctly then I do get 8-9 hours from this.

I applied a long wearing cream based shadow on both eyelids and after 8 hour wear took a picture of how it did.  As you can see the one without the primer doesn't even really show much colour whereas the primer potion eye is still going strong and you can still see the metallic colour of the cream shadow.

Being that this is the pinnacle of eye primers I was expecting a lot but to be honest I actually feel that the MUA primer is slightly better by just a teeny tiny amount and given that this is a lot cheaper I would in the future opt for this but as I have a full size primer potion and also a mini size from my naked palette I don't think I will run out for a while.

  1. I'm so glad I read this post! I love the UD primer and have almost ran out, but I'd never tried MUA before so I might get that one instead to try :) xx

  2. I have so much of the UD Primer potion left, but once it's done I'm definitely going to try the MUA one! Great review, thanks :)
